We should be courageous and allow our faith to take its root in our daily dealings. This was what helped Joshua and Caleb that enabled God to make it possible for them to enter the promise land. Trusting God in every area.
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel, from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them. So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel – Numbers 13 : 1 – 3.
Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh, they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. Then they told him and said we went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong, the cities are fortified and very large, moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south, the Hittites, the Jebusites and the Amorites dwell in the mountains and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan – Numbers 13 : 26 – 29.
They were giving reasons why they cannot enter the promise land even after the promise of God and making them to see the produce of the land. Despite the power of God which they have seen in action, they were still not convince that when God speaks, He will always fulfill His promises. They were still surrounded with fear. When God speaks, we don’t have to start looking for the meaning of what He has said or be afraid but instead we should go straight and take action. We should not forget that He is the Creator of heaven and earth, the God of all flesh, the I am that I am, the Lord of Host, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Unchangeable Changer, the Ominipotent, the Ominipresent who does not need any other authority before He can change any situation.
Same thing Jeremiah did when God sent him a message. He gave reasons why he cannot go for the message He sent him. Brethren, any message God sent us, if we fill we cannot carry out the order due to our weaknesses, we should present that weakness to Him so that He can remould us because there is nothing too difficult for Him and He is a loving Father who love His children very well.
Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to ever-come it. But the men who had gone up with him said, we are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we. And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, the land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants) and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight and so we were in their sight – Numbers 13 : 30 – 33.
Out of twelve of them that went to spy the land only two of them know and believe what God can do. Caleb told them to keep quiet because he can never be part of those who lives in fear. Caleb saw the people as a walking corpse and instead of their fellow spies seeing them in the same way, but they saw them as giants. Different people with different mentality. Caleb and Joshua were men with great courage and high level of faith which God is demanding from us today so that we can be in the level He want us to be and possess or possessions. They saw the inhabitants of the land as God saw them (as walking corpse). Brethren, God want us to see things the way He sees it. They even tried to put fear in the mind of the children of Israel to the extent of comparing themselves as grasshoppers.
One thing that is common with some people is that when they don’t have the courage and faith needed to carry out some assignment, they will try to discourage others too which is a very great mistake. When we feel that we are not competent enough to perform some duties, we should give chance to others who feel that they are courageous enough to perform such duties. The scripture says, ”What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” – Romans 8 :31. People are always afraid of taking responsibility, we want everything already made without doing any work at times because of fear.
But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, the land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread, their protection has departed from them and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them – Numbers 14 : 6 – 9.
Joshua and Caleb could no longer bear their insult and lies. According to the common adage which says, ”truth is bitter”. Some people can easily believe lies than truth. They gave them the condition that will not make the Lord to be with them. I like these words ”for they are our bread, their protection has departed from them and the Lord is with us”. That is confidence.
And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel. Then the Lord said to Moses, how long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them? I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they. And Moses said to the Lord, then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them – Numbers 14 : 10 – 13.
Because of their truth, courage and faith they wanted to stone them. Many have lost their lives for telling the truth but that cannot deprive us from not saying the truth. It is better to know you as a truthful person no matter the situation. The scripture says, that ‘‘we shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free – John 8 : 32.”
And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, how long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me. Say to them, as I live, says the Lord, just as you have spoken in My hearing so I will do to you. The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above. Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.
But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in and they shall fall know the land which you despised. But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness. And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness. According to the number of days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years and you shall know My rejection – Numbers 14 : 26 – 34.
They inflicted punishment not only on themselves but also on their children. We should try not to rebel against the Lord because whoever do such will surely have his reward. Innocent children were made to suffer for what they know nothing about for forty years. What a pain!
Now the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation complain against him by bringing a bad report of the land, those very men who brought the evil report about the land, died by the plague before the Lord. But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, of the men who went to spy out the land – Numbers 14 : 36 – 38.
God will surely fulfill His word. Although it is painful to see the innocent children suffering for what they have not caused, but because of the grace of God, He still make it possible for their children to enter the promise land. All the people that left Egypt could not enter into the promise land but only their children which they bore on their way because the spirit of Egypt has to be removed from them completely.
Father Lord, we thank You for Your love, grace, freedom and protection which You have for us. Help us to see things the way You see it so that we can become whom You want us to become and possess our possessions. Help us not to inflict our children with any punishment both the ones they know and the ones they know nothing about. Help us to leave for them a great legacy about Your kingdom so that they cannot be deviated from Your way. Help us not to have a grasshopper mentality in Jesus name.
