Now the Lord said to Abram, get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you. I will make your name great and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and I will curse him who curses you and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son and all their possessions that they had gathered and the people whom they had acquired in Haran and they departed to go to the land of Cannan. So they came to the land of Cannan – Genesis 12 : 1 – 5.
When God speaks to us at times, we try to interpret it to our own convenient instead of asking Him to give us the courage to obey Him and the understanding of His words, we try to shy away from our responsibility. This is a thing any normal person can do because Lot lost his father (Haran) and Abram has to take care of him but this action was against God’s instruction because He told Abram ”to get out from his country and from his family”. The word of God says we should love our neighbor as ourselves but not disobeying God’s instruction. The God we are serving is a merciful God who look at us with love and grace. Despite the fact that Abram did not obey Him fully, He was still with Abram. The scripture says, ”Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold – Genesis 13 : 2.” Even Lot was also rich. ”Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents –Genesis 13 : 5”.
Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together. And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and Perizzites then dwell in the land. So Abram said to Lot, please let there be no strife between you and me and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brethren. Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left then I will go to the right or if you go to the right, then I will go to the left – Genesis 13 : 6 – 9.
Everything in life has its time and season. Abram now get to the time which he has to take such a drastic decision because he has to obey God’s instruction. The two of them has to go to two opposite direction. Whether we like it or not, God has a way of forcing us to be obedient to His instructions if we are vigilant and fearful of Him. In life, we should try and take some drastic decision about what we want in life and what we does not want to be associated with in life because life is too short to be wasted for irrelevant things. The bible says that, ”if our hand is making us to sin, we should cut it off” so that we should not wast time in trying to convince the hand not to sin. We should try and abandon those things that will not make us to live a holy life as God want us to live so that we can be close to Him.
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go towards Zoar. Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other – Genesis 13 : 10 – 11.
Brethren, what is in the physical is far more smaller than what is in the spirit. Lot was carried away with what he saw with his physical eyes. As God can bring out water out of a stone, so also He can change a desert land to a fertile land, He can change a barren land to a fruitful land.
And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are – northward, southward, eastward and westward, for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width for I give it to you. Then Abram moved his tent and went and dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron and built an altar there to the Lord – Genesis 13 : 14 – 18.
Now, since Abram fully obeyed God, He now visited him with His plan. Brethren, the time one spend in disobedience, is a wasted time so why can’t we continue to live as an obedient children of God so that we can see His glory manifesting in our life.
