Then the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month and the people stayed in Kadesh and Miriam died there and was buried there. Now there was no water for the congregation, so they gathered together against Moses and Aaron. And the people contended with Moses and spoke, saying, if only we had died when our brethren died before the Lord! Why have you brought up the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our animals should die here? And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates nor is there any water to drink – Numbers 20 : 1 – 5.
Despite what God has done to Pharoah and his people which the Israelites saw with their eyes they still find it difficult to believe that God was with them. Complaining was part of them at any particular time or the other. God’s purpose was to free them from bondage of slavery and He made a covenant with their fathers, ”And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and I will give it to you as a heritage, I am the Lord” – Numbers 6 : 8. With this brethren, we should not always complain but instead we should be appreciative no matter what the situation is because God always have good and special plan for His children.
So Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting and they fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them – Numbers 20 : 6.
Moses and Aaron knows how and when to communicate with God because when God called them, they made themselves available and He continue to use them. The way God used Moses and Aaron, He never use any other prefect like that in the bible because we are not serving a God of duplicate.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, take the rod you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes and it will yield its water, thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock and give drink to the congregation and their animals. So Moses took the rod from before the Lord as He commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock and he said to them, hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock? Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod and water came out abundantly and the congregation and their animals drank – Numbers 20 : 7 – 11.
God told Moses to speak and not to struck the rock but because he was not able to control his temper and anger due to the complain of the congregation, disobedience was now made to set into his life. Although they disobeyed Him, water still came out because the congregation needs it and He could not allow them to suffer for the error Moses and Aaron committed because the congregation does not know God as Moses and Aaron knows Him. In any situation, we should be whom God has made us to be. Brethren, the time is so limited to be wasted for anger. I believe we should not try to manage our weaknesses by ourselves but instead we should hand it over to God to strengthen us. God has placed great happiness inside of us so we should not allow people to take that happiness away from us for any reason because our life is very vital to God and He is going to use us for other greater things.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them. This was the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with the Lord and He was hallowed among them – Numbers 20 : 12 – 13.
Brethren, disobedience brings punishment. As we can see the land was no more for Moses and Aaron. No matter which voices are speaking around us, we should try to obey that of God instead of allowing the influence of other voice to affect us. All what Moses and Aaron has suffered for from Egypt, they are unable to reap the harvest. In everything we do, we should always remember that our God is a God of love and at the same time He is a Consuming Fire.
And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying, Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against My word at the water of Meribah. Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son for Aaron shall be gathered to his people and die there. So Moses did just as the Lord commanded and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation. Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son and Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down of the mountain. Now when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, all the house of Israel mourned for Aaron thirty days – Numbers 20 : 23 – 29
Then I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds? I pray, let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, those pleasant mountains and Lebanon. But the Lord was angry with me on your account and would not listen to me. So the Lord said to me, enough of that! speak no more to Me of this – Deuteronomy 3 : 23 – 26.
No matter how Moses pleaded to Him for forgiveness, He refused to forgive him because of disobedience meaning He hate it. No matter the complain of the congregation, but when the punishment came, who now bear the burden? It was only Moses and Aaron why the congregation was free of any punishment.
Then the Lord said to him, this is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, I will give it to your descendants. I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there. So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor, but no one knows his grave to this day – Deuteronomy 34 : 4 – 6.
Man can lie but God cannot play with His words. That is why He is a supreme God. He has passed His judgment on Moses and Aaron and it has to be fulfilled. Thank God for whom He has made us to become through the blood of Jesus Christ. God still judge nowadays but with grace through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Father, I thank You for being a sovereign God. Help us in our service to You Lord, to be obedient to Your word no matter the circumstances that is surrounding us. You are the Lord of our lives strengthen us in our weaknesses Lord because we cannot help ourselves in Jesus name. Help us to focus on Your word and not on our power because we are nothing without You.
